Folegandros

Folegandros is a small paradise for hikers. Until recently, most of the inhabitants were livestock farmers and the only way to reach their fields was by creating their own small paths. Now, almost every beach of the island has its own path leading there.

Chora

Chora has been permanently inhabited since classical times. Folegandros belonged to the Athenian Alliance in the 5th century BC. In fact, where the church of Panagia is located today, there was a temple dedicated to the god Apollo. During the same period, the cave of Chrysospilia acquires a religious character, where adolescent coming-of-age ceremonies took place. Interior is decorated with stalactites and stalagmites. Furthermore, there are remains from antiquity: vases and their fragments, lamps, etc.

Ano Meria

Ano Meria is the second largest village of Folegandros located at the western part of the island. From mid-19th century, the settlers of Ano Meria, livestock farmers in their majority, were building houses along the length of the road. Until today, the houses are scattered on the left and right of the road for approximately 2km. The village, with its traditional color preserved unchanged in the passing of time, gives the visitor a taste of the past tied harmonically with the present.

Livadi

Livadi is located at the eastern part of the island and it is a small summer settlement close to Karavostasis, the island’s port. It has a beautiful beach as well as the only organized camping in Folegandros. The many rushes and undergrowth this area has make it looks like a small meadow (which in Greek is “κάμπος” or “λιβάδι”>Livadi and hence its name).

Agkali

The summer settlement of Agkali has the most popular beach of the island. Because of the strong “meltemia” (north-west summer winds), which blow most of the summer, Agkali and the nearby beaches (Fira, Galifos, Agios Nikolaos) are probably some of the best choices for the visitors in Folegandros, since they are located on the south of the island.

Karavostasis

Karavostasis, the island’s port, is located at the east and is the first settlement you see when you reach Folegandros. During the summer itpulses with life, whereas in winter there is only a handful of permanent residents.
